R-Controlled Vowels

2. R-controlled Matching (You will need note cards, a pencil, and another person.)
The following are R-controlled words you can use for the above activities. You can also use your own words.
water, letter, fern, bird, dirt, girl, shirt, turtle, purple, curl, swirl, turn, stir, girl, third, herd, otter, dinner
1. R-controlled Search
- Find a book.
- Look at each page.
- Make a list of all the R-controlled words in the book on a piece of paper.
- Write a sentence for 5 of the words you found. *Be sure to include capital letters and periods.
- Take a picture of your sentences and post them on your portfolio in Class Dojo.
2. R-controlled Matching (You will need note cards, a pencil, and another person.)
- Pick 7-10 R-controlled words. Make two cards for each word.
- Place all of the cards face down on a table or the floor.
- Now you're ready to play. The oldest person goes first.
- On your turn, turn over one card. Read the word.
- Turn over a second card. Read the word.
- If the words match, you keep the cards. If they do not, turn the cards back over.
- That is the end of your turn.
- Take turns playing until there are no more cards left.
- The person with the most matches wins.
- Record yourself playing this game or take a picture playing this game, and post it on your portfolio on Class Dojo.

Counting Nickels
1. Watch this video from Scratch Garden to review skip counting by 5s.
2. Watch this video from Hey! Guess What? and Dot Dot Toys about counting nickels.
3. Now, it's your turn to count nickels.
- Go to Sheppard Software to play Fruit Splat.
- Make sure you pick nickels.
- When you're finished, e-mail your results to your teacher.

For those of you who are unable to do the activities above, try one or more of these activities instead.
1. Play MONEY GRAB! (You will need a bag of twenty nickels.)
2. Play FOUR IN A ROW! (You will need a bag of 20 nickels, a game board, and 20 game pieces for each player. One player could use pieces of cereal and the other player could use pieces of candy.)
1. Play MONEY GRAB! (You will need a bag of twenty nickels.)
- The person with the most missing teeth goes first.
- The first player grabs some nickels out of the bag.
- The player counts the nickels and then says this sentence, "___ nickels is worth ___ cents."
- Example: If Bud grabs 7 nickels, he would count them by fives and say, "7 nickels is worth 35 cents."
- If the player is correct, the player gets 5 points and puts the nickels back in the bag.
- If the player is not correct, the player gets 0 points and puts the nickels back in the bag.
- The game is over when a player gets to 50 points.
- Take a picture of yourself playing this game and post it on your portfolio in Class Dojo.
2. Play FOUR IN A ROW! (You will need a bag of 20 nickels, a game board, and 20 game pieces for each player. One player could use pieces of cereal and the other player could use pieces of candy.)
- The person wearing the most blue goes first.
- The first player grabs some nickels out of the bag.
- The player counts the nickels and then says this sentence, "___ nickels is worth ___ cents."
- Example: If Bert grabs 5 nickels, he would count them by fives and say, "5 nickels is worth 25 cents."
- If the player is correct, the player finds that amount on the game board and places one game piece on it.
- If the player is not correct, the player does not put a game piece on the board.
- The player puts the coins bag in the bag and it's the next player's turn.
- The first player to get four in a row is the winner! If no one gets four in a row, the player with the most pieces on the board is the winner!
- Take a picture of yourself playing this game and post it on your portfolio in Class Dojo.
