Counting Pennies, Nickels, or Dimes
1. Watch this video from ABCmouse about identifying coins one more time. Dance and sing along.
2. Play RACE TO A DOLLAR! (You will need a bag with 12 pennies, 8 nickels, and 4 dimes, two dice, a game board, and a game piece for each player. Buttons, rocks, or pieces of cereal or candy make good game pieces.)
- The oldest player goes first.
- The first player closes his/her eyes and takes one coin out of the bag.
- The player rolls two dice and adds the numbers together.
- The player takes more coins out of the bag that match the coin picked in #2 so that the number of coins is equal to the total of the two dice or until there are no more matching coins in the bag, whichever comes first.
- The player says the name the coins. ( I have ___.)
- The player says the value of the coins. (They are worth ___ cent(s) each.)
- The player counts and says the value of the set of coins. (The set of coins is worth ____ cents.)
- If the player is correct, the player moves his/her piece that many spots forward on the game board.
- If the player is not correct, the player should try a second time.
- If the player is not correct a second time, the player does not move his/her game piece.
- The player returns the coins to the bag and the next player gets to play.
- The player who gets to 100 cents first is the winner!
- Take a picture of yourself playing the game and post it on your portfolio on Class Dojo.

This is an example of how to play RACE TO A DOLLAR!
- Jack is the oldest player and goes first.
- He closes his eyes and pulls out a penny.
- He rolls the two dice. The numbers on the dice are 6 and 2. He adds 6 and 2 more to make 8.
- He takes 7 more pennies out of the bag to make 8 pennies in all.
- Jack says, "I have pennies. They are worth 1 cent each. The set of coins is worth 8 cents."
- Jack is correct and gets to move his game piece forward 8 places.
- He puts the coins back in the bag and it's the next player's turn.
- Viv goes next.
- She closes her eyes and pulls out a dime.
- She rolls the two dice. The numbers on the dice are 3 and 4. She adds 4 and 3 more to make 7.
- She needs to take 6 more dimes out of the bag to make 7 dimes in all, but there are only 3 more dimes in the bag. She can only have 4 dimes because there are only 4 dimes in the bag.
- Viv says, "I have dimes. They are worth 5 cents each. The set of coins is worth 20 cents."
- Viv is not correct, so she tries again.
- This time she says, "I have dimes. They are worth 10 cents each. The set of coins is worth 40 cents."
- Viv is correct and gets to move her game piece forward 40 places.
- She puts the coins back in the bag and it's the next player's turn
- Jack goes again.
- He closes his eyes and pulls out a nickel.
- He rolls the two dice. The numbers on the dice are 1 and 2. He adds 2 and 1 more to make 3.
- He takes 2 more nickels out of the bag to make 3 nickels in all.
- Jack says, "I have nickels. They are worth 10 cents each. The set of coins is worth 30 cents."
- Jack is not correct, so he tries again.
- This time he says, "I have nickels. They are worth 5 cents each. The set of coins is worth 50 cents."
- Jack is not correct a second time, so he doesn't move his game piece.
- He puts the coins back in the bag and it's the next player's turn
